  • Bed and Breakfast Lucca Centro - Cento Passi Dalle Mura - Piazza Anfiteatro

    Amphitheater Square

Without any doubts it’s one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Built on the ruins of the Roman Amphitheater (II century AD), it became square in the Middle Ages: it was called "parlascio", as it was the place where meetings were held from the citizens. Was gradually filled with buildings, used as a salt or powder warehouse as well as prison. It was renewed in 1830 by the architect Lorenzo Nottolini, who recovered its original structure by removing all the small buildings.

  • Bed and Breakfast Lucca Centro - Cento Passi Dalle Mura - Torre Guinigi

    Guinigi's Tower

The tower was commissioned by the Guinigi family, rich and powerful merchants of Lucca, in the fourteenth century. It is 44.25 meters high and at the top there is a roof garden where large oaks were planted; you can reach the top after climbing 230 steps. We don’t know exactly when the garden was created, however an image drawn in the Chronicles of John Sercambi (XV century) reveals the presence of a tower crowned with trees. The view from the top is particularly striking as you can clearly see the Old Town as well as Lucca hills in the distance.

  • Bed and Breakfast Lucca Centro - Cento Passi Dalle Mura - Le Mura

    The Walls

You don't realize the beauty of the Walls of Lucca until you set your foots on it. What strikes you is not really their 12 meters height but their 4 km length and 30 meters width. Their construction was begun in 1504 and completed in 1645. They were created to dissuade neighbors from attacking Lucca and were transformed during the nineteenth century in a pleasant walking path with ramparts and surrounding meadows becoming a large and impressive urban park.

  • Bed and Breakfast Lucca Centro - Cento Passi Dalle Mura - Il Duomo

    The Cathedral

The first church of St. Martino was built at the behest of S. Frediano, bishop of Lucca, in the second half of the sixth century. Destroyed and rebuilt, the Cathedral was consecrated in 1070 by Pope Alexander II in the presence of the Countess Matilde of Canossa. The church, as it appears today, has little of its original structure: the facade is mainly inspired by the Duomo of Pisa, enriched by other elements reminding the Romanesque style of Lucca. The unique feature of the facade is its strong asymmetry: the right arch is in fact much narrower compared to the middle and the left ones, probably to fit in the limited space left by the pre-existing bell tower.
